If a bunch of dead, pickled slug-thingies ever lead you to a hidden secret door, I'd suggest definitely DO open that door, it can only be a good thing.
More immediately, if your accused of lying point out that there is nothing in said jar and that the trail of whatever liquid that was in there toward those boxes and the door does NOT look like someone swept in any way.
